March in media intelligence is very much focused on social with announcements from Meltwater, Reddit, ShopMy and Meta. Also, a gentle reminder that the AMEC Summit is just around the corner.
Meltwater to focus on partnerships
Meltwater has announced a partnership with Social Factors. The collaboration will allow clients of both Meltwater and Social Factor to benefit from a suite of services that combines Meltwater’s advanced social analytics and social media management capabilities with Social Factor’s prowess in social media operations and community engagement. This announcement continues a trend we have seen from Meltwater, focused on expanding its partner ecosystem, sparked by the appointment of Doug Balut as Senior Vice President of Global Alliances and Partnerships at the end of 2023. The announcement follows quickly on the heels of last month’s partnership with Microsoft.
All eyes on Reddit
Reddit shares ended their first day of trading up 48%, as the social network launched its IPO in March. The company has not turned an annual profit since launching in 2005, but focused its investor pitch on the us of its content as training for AI. Reddit is an incredibly rich source of audience data, and ahead of its IPO the company launched Reddit Pro its organic social tool, which include social listening. It also shouldn’t be a surprise that soon after its IPO, Reddit announced a partnership with Cision to expand the use of Reddit’s Data API. Unsurprisingly, Cision plans to supercharge the development of its proprietary AI-powered brand reputation and audience analysis technologies across its entire product suite
Meta to close CrowdTangle
Speaking of audience data, Meta has announced it will close CrowdTangle in August. CrowdTangle is a free-to-use social listening tool, allowing users to access public data on Facebook, Instagram and Reddit. According to Meta, “phasing out CrowdTangle will allow us to focus resources on our new research tools, Meta Content Library and Content Library API”. The tools cofounder Brandon Silverman criticised the timing of the shutdown. (CrowdTangle is used by researchers to track disinformation and would have been a critical tool in the lead up the 2024 US Presidential elections.)
ShopMy closes funding round
ShopMy, a marketing platform for content creators to connect with brands and monetize their content, has raised $USD18.5 million. ShopMy’s marketing platform equips creators with the tools they need to earn from their product recommendations, like building digital storefronts, accessing a catalog products, making commissionable links and engaging with companies. The company will use the money to help scale its network of 40,000 creators.
AMEC heads to Sofia
Media intelligence has had many homes over the years. New Hampshire, where Katie Paine set up Delahaye many years ago, is still producing talented media analysts. The Nordics perfected a model that could scale, and gave the world Cision, Meltwater and, more recently, Opoint. California has given the industry innovation and an awful lot of private equity funding. The UK, the historical birthplace of media monitoring, is one of the most competitive markets on the planet and home to Onclusive and Brandwatch. New York has produced commercially successful businesses, such as Sprinklr and Dataminr. More recently, Bulgaria has been providing the human expertise for media analysis. A Data Pro is this year’s AMEC Summit headline sponsor, and their team and alumni continue to move the PR measurement industry forward. Don’t forget to book your tickets to Sofia for the AMEC Summit on May 21 to 23.
